About The Children

Children waiting in Georgia for forever homes are both boys and girls. Children living with special needs are between the ages of 18 months and 5 years typically. Sibling groups and children with less special needs referred for adoption are generally 8 years and older. The needs of children vary from mild to moderate.

  • The parents must be a minimum of 16 years and a maximum of 45 years older than the child they are adopting. USCIS requires parents to be at least 25 years of age.  Please contact CHI for all the specific criteria or go to our information page

Travel and Time Frame

Travel

Adopting from Georgia is a one-trip process about 3-4 weeks long.

Time Frame

The time between travel and referral is approximately 4-6 months.

ADOPTION PROCESS

Apply to Children’s House International’s Georgia Program.

Complete the Home Study Process with a CHI Social Worker or a Local Hague Accredited Social Worker.

Submit Approved Home Study.

Apply for I-800A Approval from USCIS.

Compile your dossier for Georgia.

Obtain Apostille seals for dossier documents.

Send your dossier to CHI to send to Georgia to be reviewed and approved by the Georgian Central Authority. Depending on what you are open to regarding the age, gender, and health status of a child, your referral times will vary.

Once the Central Authority issues your referral, families generally have the information reviewed by an international adoption doctor and have two weeks to decide whether to accept the referral.

Once a referral is accepted, both parents must go to court, but one may leave afterward if permitted by the judge.

The court decree will be issued within 2-14 days. The court has the discretion to require a four week waiting period before the decree goes into effect. Parents may choose to stay in Georgia during that time while their paperwork is being completed or return when their documents are ready a few weeks later.

After the child’s visa is issued, the family is allowed to travel home!
