About The Children

Children waiting for families in China Hong Kong are typically difficult to place domestically. These children have a moderate degree of special needs such as developmental delays or substance exposure in utero. Children may have medical conditions such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism or complex medical conditions. Many of the children are older and have come from hard backgrounds. Primary religion in China Hong Kong Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.

Eligibility

Parents must be at least 25 years old. Parents may not be more than 45 years older than the child they wish to adopt.
Heterosexual married couples who have been married for at least three years or single women with adequate resources.
If either parent has been married prior, they must be married for a minimum of 5 years in current marriage.
Parents must have a High School level of education.
Prospective Adoptive families reside in one of CHI's licensed states (WA, UT, LA, ID, FL, TX), for CHI to conduct home study. (If you do not live in one of the states listed above, CHI will need to ensure there is a Hong-Kong approved home study agency in your state.)

Travel and Time Frame

Travel

Adopting from China Hong Kong is a one trip process about 7 days long. Children return to the USA with their families with a formal guardianship. After a period of 6 months, the family must finalize their adoption through their state court and pursue citizenship for their child.

Time Frame

Most families will pursue a child from the waiting child list after their home study is completed and approved. Official referral of an identified child will take approximately 4-8 months after a valid dossier is submitted to the SWD (Social Welfare Department) in China Hong Kong.

Procedures to be granted guardianship and to leave the country with your child take roughly 4-9 months.

The screening and officially matching process for a waiting child can take an estimated 4-8 months

Prepare for your trip to meet your child and accept placement.

Attend Embassy appointment to receive child’s visa and travel home.
