About The Children

Children waiting in Mexico for forever families are 8 years of age or older, sibling groups, and children that have special needs.

Mexican children come from a variety of ethnic groups that make up Mexico’s rich cultural heritage. These groups are Indigenous Mexican, Afro-Mexican, and Mestizo (Indigenous and Spanish).

Due to the close location of Mexico to the USA, adoption of relatives who qualifies is possible(Kinship adoptions).   Our team in Mexico is very knowledgeable about this process.  If you are interested about adopting a family member in Mexico, we will arrange a call with our team to see if it is a possibility.

Eligibility

If you are married, you must jointly adopt the child and your spouse must also be either a U.S. citizen or in legal status in the United States. Oldest parent must be at least 17 years older than the child they intend to adopt.
If you are unmarried, you must be at least 25 years old.
Families with health and mental issues will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
No more than three marriages per spouse. Couples should be married for at least 2 years.
At least one parent must be a U.S. Citizen.

Travel and Time Frame

Travel

2-3 trips. Due to the large amount of paperwork in both the Mexican and U.S. processes, adoptive parents must be prepared to spend approximately  3-6 weeks in Mexico and may be expected to travel several times. This depends on the region where the child is and their system. Closer travel estimates will be given during the process.

Time Frame

The average time between when the dossier arrives in Mexico and receiving the referral can take about 18-24 months.

ADOPTION PROCESS

CHI has worked with adoptions in Latin America for 25 years. CHI’s International Specialist is an adoptive mom and also has over 25 years of experience.  She is bilingual and will be available should you have any questions before and during your stay. Apply to Children’s House International’s Mexico Program.

Complete the Home Study Process with a CHI Social Worker or a Local Hague Accredited Social Worker.

Submit Approved Home Study.

Apply for I-800A Approval from USCIS.

Compile your dossier for Mexico.

Obtain Apostille seals for dossier documents.

Your completed dossier will be sent to Mexico for translation. It will then be forwarded to SRE (Mexican Central Authority in reception of documents from other countries) for their review and approval and then will be presented to DIF (central authority in international adoptions)

DIF provides a referral, and the CHI Social Services Supervisor sends the referral to the family

Upon family acceptance of the referral, the i800 is filed with USCIS to determine the child’s adoptability. Travel takes place after USCIS approval

Both parents must travel to Mexico to the region where the child resides. One parent may return home after the first week and return near the end of the process for court. Depending on the case and if it is between relatives, could be that one parent could stay in Mexico for the 2-4 weeks and there is a possibility both parents must go to one time to court once the case is presented and at the end of the process once we get the adoption decree, the parents must travel to pick up the child and to the last part of the process to go back home.

After obtaining the child’s visa at the U.S. consulate, the family can return to the U.S. with their child.
